ADNOC Distribution Eyes Future of Driverless EVs

Adnoc Distribution, the leading fuel and convenience retail network in the UAE, has expressed its readiness to support the future of autonomous mobility. According to Chief Operating Officer Klaas Mantel, the company's extensive infrastructure and skilled personnel position it ideally to serve driverless vehicles. While this service is not yet active, Mantel envisions the company's evolving mobility stations as natural hubs for this emerging technology.

The Rise of Autonomous and Electric Vehicles in the UAE

All autonomous vehicles operating within the UAE are fully electric, aligning with the national Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative. The region is already witnessing this shift, with Abu Dhabi deploying a fleet of self-driving taxis and Dubai advancing testing permits for similar services. This integration of smart transport is a cornerstone of the country's future mobility plans.

Strategic Expansion into EV Charging Infrastructure

Adnoc Distribution is actively tracking the growing transition to electric vehicles. The company is exploring opportunities to establish electric vehicle charging stations in Saudi Arabia, following a successful pilot site in Egypt. Notably, it recently launched the region's largest superfast EV charging hub in Abu Dhabi. Mantel emphasized the company's adaptable, energy-agnostic strategy, stating its commitment to follow market demand toward electrification.

National targets are ambitious, aiming for half of all vehicles on UAE roads to be electric by 2050. Industry projections estimate electric vehicles will capture over 15% of new car sales by 2030, potentially rising to 25% by 2035. However, a significant infrastructure gap exists; meeting these goals may require 45,000 charging points by 2035, a number that current installation rates are not on track to fulfill.

The Compelling Case for Electrification

The advantages of electric vehicles are driving adoption:

  • Reduced total cost of ownership over time.
  • Fewer mechanical components leading to lower maintenance.
  • A smaller carbon footprint.
  • Enhanced driving performance and experience.

Adnoc Distribution believes that by strategically deploying infrastructure along major routes, it can play a pivotal supporting role in the nation's electrification journey and its sustainable development objectives.

Exploring a Broader Sustainable Energy Mix

Beyond electricity, the company continues to research alternative sustainable fuels. It already offers compressed natural gas (CNG) for vehicles and has conducted trials using hydrogen in buses. While open to these technologies, Mantel noted that the current economic models for such new energies remain challenging, reinforcing the company's view that, for the foreseeable future, electrification is the primary pathway forward.
