Luis Miranda's Doubt Before "Hamilton" Success

A recent interview with Luis A. Miranda Jr. reveals a surprising moment of doubt he had regarding his son Lin-Manuel Miranda's performance at the White House in 2009. Invited to perform at an Evening of Poetry, Music and the Spoken Word, Lin-Manuel initially considered showcasing an early version of what would become a groundbreaking musical number.
Lin-Manuel sought his father's advice, explaining his desire to perform a song from his then-in-progress project, "Hamilton." Luis, however, confessed to urging his son to stick with the familiar success of "In the Heights." He believed that playing something already established was a safer bet.
Despite his father's suggestion, Lin-Manuel opted to present "The Hamilton Mixtape," an embryonic version of "Alexander Hamilton" at the White House. The performance captivated the audience, and as Luis acknowledged, this pivotal moment marked the genesis of something extraordinary.
The Rise of a Musical Phenomenon
"Hamilton" evolved from that initial mixtape concept into a full-fledged Broadway production, opening in 2015 and achieving phenomenal success. Before "Hamilton", Lin-Manuel debuted on Broadway with "In the Heights," winning four Tony Awards, including Best Original Score.
The musical "Hamilton" went on to win 11 Tony Awards, cementing its place in theatrical history. "Hamilton"'s awards included Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score. In 2020, a filmed version of the original Broadway cast was released, bringing the production to a wider audience.
Celebrating a Decade of Impact
Reflecting on the 10th anniversary of "Hamilton," Luis expressed his admiration for his son's creation. He highlighted the significance of the filmed version, noting that it allowed families who might not have had the opportunity to see the Broadway show to experience its magic on the big screen. The film is currently enjoying a theatrical re-release in select cinemas to celebrate the milestone.
